Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does GemStorm work?
  • Sign up for a free account. Submit a link to your favorite website, article, game, music video - whatever you think people will like! Give a little information about it, and post it! Users will check it out and vote it up if they like it. If it gets bumped up enough, your post will make the front page where everyone will see it.

  • Can I post links to anything?
  • Of course, as long as it's legal. Even posting your own affiliate and referral links that will generate more revenue for you. If users don't think it's interesting or worthwhile, they just won't bump it up. Do check out the rules though.

  • How can I get paid for all this?
  • When you post a link, GemStorm includes a Google AdSense ad into your entry. Users who click on it will see it, and there's a good chance it will interest them enough to click on it. More users mean more clicks - so make it something users will want to check out and bump up! When one of your links gets a click, GemStorm will share the revenue with you 50/50. This will show up in your Google AdSense account by the way, so you'll be able to see the money adding up. Google takes care of the payment, so you'll never have to worry about whether GemStorm will pay out.

  • Can I get paid for referring other people to GemStorm?
  • Absolutely! You'll get a referral link for new users to use - it's under My account -> Referrals. When they sign up and earn their own click revenue, you'll earn 10% of it. That 10% is out of GemStorm's percentage, not theirs - so they won't be out anything. Plus, the more users who read through Gems the more clicks you can get!

  • How do I enter my Google AdSense information?
  • Go into My account -> Adsense, and enter in your Google AdSense client ID number. You can find it in your AdSense account.

  • How can I draw more users to my submissions?
  • Submit things that users will be interested in - everyone's already heard of Britney Spears, but most people haven't heard of RepRap yet. Be sure to categorize your links well, adding lots of relevant tags to each - you'll want users to be able to find them! This will help you get more users, more clicks, and more money.

  • What are Caravans?
  • Caravans are GemStorm's interest groups. We're trading information here, and making money for it - imagine a nomadic tribe of gem traders. So let's suppose you want to create a group specifically for Double Fanucci, for example. You could do that, and people with an interest in Double Fanucci would go there to check out all the latest Double Fanucci information.

Caravans can be public, or private and invite-only. It's up to whoever creates the Caravan. Which means if you create a private Caravan, you'll need to do the inviting if you want people to join it!

  • What is a Nexus?
  • A Nexus is a new way to bring together lots of information on a subject. When you create a Nexus, you type in the names of existing Gems on the topic. GemStorm will find them for you, and your Nexus will feature a list of clickable links all on the same topic. This means you can craft a Nexus about, say, Parisi Squares and bring together in one place lots of other Gems on the subject. You'll have just done a lot of legwork bringing together information that many other people have brought to GemStorm... and that kind of stranding-together of information makes it more valuable than just one Gem on the topic would be. You'll have just used your time to make someone else's research a lot easier, and that will give your Nexus value. People will be more likely to bump it up, and as more people see it in the weeks and months ahead they'll be more likely to click on the ad in your Nexus. Your Nexus doesn't even have to be about something very popular either... if you've got the Numero Uno repository of information on cheap nose hair trimmers on the internet, it will turn up when people go looking for cheap nose hair trimmers. So find your niche, whatever it is - and make money learning and sharing about it!

  • Hey! This guy's submission looks... made of wrong!
  • We don't have many rules on GemStorm - if it's legal and doesn't defraud or mislead people, it's probably okay. Disagree with it? Then don't vote it up! If you're right, people are never going to see it anyway - and you probably have better things to do with your time. But if you think something is seriously beyond wrong (and think we'd agree) then feel free to hit Flag this and we can take a look at it.

    Editing Gems

    Hello Gem-storm,

I had a question about editing gems after you've created them. I have one that I want to change some wording on the description and I'm not able to find where to do that.

    Thank you in advance,
    Hugs,
    Julian

    Hiya Julian. =)

Due to a flaw in the module's code, it isn't currently possible to edit your Gems once they've been created. I expect this to be fixed shortly. In the meantime, please use the Preview button aggressively, to make sure your Gems are just how you'd like them to be before you hit Submit... and feel free to e-mail me if there's anything really outstanding you'd like corrected.

Oh - you can always Kill your Gem (through the Edit feature) and start over, if it's really bad. =)

    Be well,

    - Satori
